Skincare routine for vitiligo-prone skin

Skin with vitiligo is often extra sensitive to irritation, friction and active ingredients. In this article, we will go through a gentle skin care routine for vitiligo – with a focus on supporting the skin barrier and reducing external stressors.

The routine is designed to support the skin barrier and reduce external stress, but does not replace medical treatment of vitiligo.

Basic principles

1. "Less is more"

Keep the ingredient list short; avoid strong acids, retinoids, high levels of vitamin C, and other potentially irritating active ingredients.

2. Avoid active ingredients

Focus on gentle cleansing and moisturizing.

3. Friction & stress = enemies

Use light pressure from your fingers instead of cotton pads, towels or brushes.

  • Continue to avoid peeling pads, microneedling, acid toners and high percentage active boosters/serums – they can trigger Koebner reactions.
